Give it a rattle…

Pay attention everyone. A very fine young chap from Derry by the name of Noel Heaney is setting up a mag and looking for submissions. I’ll let him explain in his own words:

Jigsaw magazine looks to illuminate local creatives in Northern Ireland, giving them a space and a platform to showcase their talent, build a community and come together.

Jigsaw is located in Derry, Northern Ireland. It is a free magazine, and will be distributed into places where people who are appreciative of the arts can look at or take a copy. It will involve designers, photographers, artists, poets, writers, film-makers, etc. Jigsaw looks for people to create work to a brief, There are very little restrictions.

The first issue will be out later in the year. Keep your ears to the ground.

Jigsaw Magazine is a masters project from  Noel Heaney. Noel has worked on magazine
design amongst other things for two years.

So, why not pay his site a visit and start producing some wonderful submissions for issue one?

All Change

I can’t believe it! Mark Case is skiing down the slush covered French slopes while we get to launch the new Whitenoise website, all on our own. So what does that mean? Things have gone really smoothly? There were no last minute design changes? Mark had to put more polish on his skis this morning? There’s no mention of the words ‘shiny’ or ‘new’ on any of our launch copy? NO NO NO…. It means I get to write the very first NEW SITE blog :)

So here it goes….

Welcome to our shiny new website! This is our sixth site redesign and I am proud to launch it in the year Whitenoise celebrates its tenth anniversary. Full of the usual fun… fantastic client work, Whitenoise tv, team stuff, our up to the minute blog and even more ways to keep in touch with Whitenoise and our antics, we believe this is our bestest site yet. We hope you agree, please enjoy, let us know what you think and keep coming back for more.

So without further ado please raise your glasses… I name this site whitenoisestudios.com, may God bless her and all who visit her.

Enjoy!

We’re pleased to announce Whitenoise have been appointed as the graphic design partner for Carrickfergus Borough Council, after a fierce pitching process.

Having worked with them in the past (2004-2007) we’re delighted to have the opportunity to do so again and having put heart and soul into our presentation, we are excited and exhausted in equal measure. Now I just need to lie down and close my eyes for five minutes… Zzzzz…

Zzzzzz…

Whitenoise are seriously contributing to the energy crisis at the moment, as lots of midnight oil is currently being burnt fuelling the feverish pace of activity as we rush to meet various project deadlines.

Those of you who are regular visitors to this blog may be bypassing our home page entirely, and if that’s the case you may be blissfully unaware that we are spending quite a bit of time renovating our website too…

Sticking with websites, check out the lovely new one for our mates Dave and Jim at NewcastleGateshead Evolution, with smashing design courtesy of our very own Christine…

Moving on swiftly from websites, Peedy was pleased as punch to see the fruits of his labours broadcast last night on BBC Northern Ireland, with the launch of ‘House of the Year’ presented by Mr Frills, Lawrence Llewellyn Bowen (did I spell tht right??)…

And sticking with the Beeb, here’s Peedy again greasing up to Mr Stephen Nolan on the shoot of the new promo trail for the Stephen Nolan Show…

And in between all this tomfoolery we’re still managing to get lots of lovely work done, so keep checking back for more of the good stuff…

Some of our bestest work ever…

17 Feb

I promised you some nice new work in the last post. It’s great to work on mega projects with big budgets but some of our bestest work ever is small but beautifully formed – just like these two great wee jobs:

Baby-Allen

Say hello to Paul & Nicola’s son, Sam. That’s Paul struggling to get him into his footie kit.

And here’s the (as yet sex unknown) 2nd addition to the Jeffers clan – with feet like that it look’s like Rory and Jacci have got either a footballer or a dancer on their hands…

WORKING SOME BIG NUMBERS… This week is going to be a significant one in the history of Whitenoise: This morning saw us open up Job Number 9991 (renewal/update of a CMS database for the SS Nomadic website) so I suspect before the week is out we will have started on Job Number 10,000… And they said we’d never last! I have no idea who the lucky client will be but I guess we need to mark the occasion in some way – if anyone has any suggestions, let me know.

Eagle-eyed blog followers among you will notice just below the yellow post it is a note on the ‘10,000′ line reminding us all about the next Whitenoise book – tentatively titled ‘DECADE’ (for obvious reasons, as this is our 10th anniversary, although it will actually only be the seventh in the series) – keep checking back for more on this…

SOME MORE INTERESTING NEWS… This week also saw us take delivery of ‘BASIC LOGOS’ from our friends at Index Publishing in Barcelona, and we’re delighted to see that they chose to include four of our client identities…

BUSY BUSY… I know we all have our own opinions and feelings as to whether the economy is out of recession or not, but the studio is certainly a hive of activity at the moment. Obviously volume of work doesn’t always directly equate with profitability, but it’s good to know that we’re all being kept occupied on client projects – and if we’re busy, our clients must be too – witness the production office job board…

P2178451

There’s a lot of projects which have quite long lead times up there, so I don’t have anything to show right now, but keep checking back for some big news over the next week or so – I’ll keep you posted.

Too much time on his hands…

29 Jan

It may have taken Apple a decade to launch their new tablet Mac iPhone on Steroids, but it took Peedy only an hour or so to mess up their lovely launch video…

The boy definitely has too much time on his hands… In fairness, he has got a pretty busy workload, and here’s another one that’s just come off the assembly line in recent days…

Finally, thought you might appreciate this…

That’s your lot – see you on the other side.

And it’s over to the judges…

25 Jan

Last week was a busy one for Mark M as he joined the great and the good of Northern Ireland’s business community to sit on the judging panel for the Allianz Arts & Business NI Awards

JudgeMarkM

Whitenoise are a longstanding supporter of Arts & Business and passionately believe in the value of fostering the interface between the arts and business, so it was great to have the opportunity to be proactively involved in such an important event.

How Much???

22 Jan

An interesting week in design. I was very privileged to be asked recently to sit on the steering group for the newly formed NI Design Alliance (nice job by Jamie at Design by Front) and I attended the first planning meeting last Thursday – it was very interesting and we looked at some really cool ideas for 2010 – I’ll keep you all posted on how this progresses.

How much is design worth? I ask the question because of a very interesting telephone conversation between Jo, our Production Manager, and a long-standing client at the beginning of the week. The phone call concerned a regular (quarterly) magazine we design and print for said client, for which the contract is just coming up for renewal.

The magazine, while quite small (typically 16 pages) can be a bit of a beast to pull together and we know as a matter of historic fact the  design time comes in at around 40 hours, but, mindful of client budgets and the realities of present economic conditions, we are happy to bill for 30 to keep everyone (except Jo, who wants to charge for 40!) happy. All well and good.

As part of the new contract process, our client was required to put this out for comparative quoting, and as we knew she would be approaching studios operating at the same level in the marketplace as us, we felt quite comfortable that our costs would compare favourably and we stood a better than average chance of retaining the business. Imagine our surprise when she called Jo to ask “how  come X studio are quoting just £400 for the same job?” Hmmm…

If the studio (don’t ask, I’m not telling, but you’d be VERY surprised if I did) were a two man band I could understand, but knowing them and knowing what level they tend to pitch themselves at, I’m at a loss to understand what’s going on – possible reasons include:

1: Someone missed a zero off the quote
2: They figured Whitenoise were a cert to retain the work so they’d just put a silly price in to see what happened
3: They’re in trouble

My concern isn’t primarily for us or the other studio – it’s with the client, who will be under pressure from her procurement people to award to the lowest price, regardless of the quality of the outcome, resulting in her budgets being cut for the term of the contract.

The reason I say all this is there has been a similar pricing war rumbling on in the Northern Ireland print trade recently, resulting in ever lower prices and margins, the building of an unrealistic expectation amongst clients of the true cost of print, and, ultimately the collapse of a major printer and employer. And we all have to live with the fallout. I won’t go into the number of businesses I hear of recently who are kitting and training up internally to produce literature and sales & marketing materials themselves rather than engage the services of a professional design studio.

The result of all this? The devaluing of design as an essential tool in the business community, falling standards in execution and competency as more work is hurried out by competent designers working under pressure to deliver with no time or budget, and weakened advertising, promotion and branding, produced by non-design-literate internal staff who have been ‘upskilled’ by short-sighted management – right at the time when powerful, compelling and value-rich design is needed most. Hmmm…

So, that’s enough of my ranting – soapbox away.

Investment makes sense: we think so anyway, so we’re continuing with our rolling programme of Mac upgrades, with the 2nd lovely shiny 27″ iMac arriving this morning, making Mark Canavan a very happy bunny. It’s a beast:

newimac

I have six or seven other G5 Desktop PowerMacs scheduled for similar replacement over the coming months, and I’ve told the crew it’s names in a hat and the luck of the draw, so there’ll be some nail-biting times ahead…

Lights, Camera, Action: While we’re in a spending mood we though we’d finally address Peedy’s constant complaints about our ageing Canon XM1 DV Cam, which has just this week made way for a Sony EX1R HD camera. All I know is it shoots 1080p, it’s black and it’s covered in hundreds of buttons. Oh, and it’s bloody expensive too:

newcam

So I want to see some awesome self-promo video work over the coming weeks Peedy – no excuses.

Back of the net: and back to Mark Canavan – here’s his funky wee corporate identity for the Soccer Shed – the soon to be opened indoor football and sports venue:

Soccer-Shed-RENDER

Isn’t it smashing? Another smashing thing is the current state of our production board – nice to see lots of felt-tip squiggles and not too much white space:

workloads

We’ve hit 2010 running, and long may it continue. I don’t think for one minute it’s going to be an easy year, but we seem to be keeping busy with a healthy mix of existing and new clients requiring a bit of the Whitenoise graphical pixie dust.

All aboard: We managed to deliver the new Ulsterbus Tours 2010 brochure just before Christmas, thanks to the sterling work of Kerrie and Alix:

This one was a bit like War and Peace, and while strictly speaking it isn’t hot off the press it’s definitely worth showing.

One Last Thing: That’s about it for now, apart from, in true Steve Jobs style, “One Last Thing”. No, it’s not a game-changing new tablet Mac crafted from solid glass and titanium, and powered by unicorn tears, but it is almost as wonderful and legendary in it’s own way – here’s a blurry spycam shot of the new Whitenoise website, due to be unveiled, ahem,  “Some Time Soon”:

And that, as they say, is that. Ta Ra.
